Dakar: Caldecott dies following accident.

A dark cloud hangs over the 2006 Dakar Rally following the death of Australian motorbike rider Andy Caldecott in an accident on stage nine of the event.

Caldecott fell 250km into the longest stage of the event from Nouakchott to Kiffa and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical teams who had been immediately sent to his aid.

"Aware of the accident at 11:31am, the rally headquarters immediately sent a medical helicopter that landed at 11:55am at the scene of the accident," a statement from the organisers said. "However, the doctors could only note that the rider had died instantly."

Caldecott, who was 41, took two stage wins on his way to sixth in the Dakar last year, and was a late addition to the KTM-Repsol team for the 2006 event following an injury to Jordi Duran that left him unable to take part.

The experienced Australian rider – who won stage three - was lying in tenth place overall despite being handed a time penalty on the rest day. It was a display which had impressed team boss Jordi Arcarons, especially given that Caldecott had had no time to prepare for a race he was resigned to missing due to sponsorship problems.

Caldecott becomes the third rider to lose his life on the Dakar in the last two years, following the deaths of Fabrizio Meoni and Jose Manuel Perez in 2005.

Crash.net (And me)joins the entire Dakar caravan in extending our condolences to Andy's family and friends.
